Clinton: Your States Don’t Matter, Part II

WE ARE NOT IMPRESSED WITH THIS STRATEGY.

We heard Hillary say which states don’t matter before, but in case we missed it the first time, her chief strategist, Mark Penn, let us know it all over again this past week with this helpful tidbit of a quote:

“Could we possibly have a nominee who hasn’t won any of the significant states — outside of Illinois? That raises some serious questions about Sen. Obama.”

The line of questioning seems to try and imply (among other things) that because Obama didn’t win in New York or California, he won’t be able to win those states in the general election. Strange logic, since these two states will be “blue” states whether or not Hillary is running for office.

However, how long does the Clinton campaign think it can continue insulting the remaining population of the United States by implying their votes / states are insignificant?

  • Sorry Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Carolina, Utah, Virginia, and Washington. Oh, and the District of Columbia. Your states don’t matter.

And, exactly how is this considered a winning strategy by the Clinton campaign?

Votes for Obama Under-Recorded in New York

VOTE RESULTS SHOW OBAMA RECEIVED ZERO VOTES IN 80 DISTRICTS IN MANHATTAN & BROOKLYN

Barack Obama’s primary results from Super Tuesday were significantly under-recorded in several districts around the city - in some cases leaving him with zero votes when, in fact, he had pulled in hundreds, the Board of Elections said yesterday.

A review just released by The New York Times of the unofficial results reported on primary night found about 80 election districts including Harlem among the city’s 6,106 where Obama supposedly did not receive even one vote, including cases where he ran a respectable race in a nearby district.

Alician D. Barksdale of Harlem said she had voted for Mr. Obama and her daughter had, too, by absentee ballot.

“Everyone around here voted for him,” she said.

At the Archive, a cafe and video store on the border of Bushwick and East Williamsburg, the manager, Brad Lee, said,

“There were Obama posters in everyone’s windows,” he said. “There was even Obama graffiti.”

Initial results in the 94th District of Harlem, for example, showed a 141-0 sweep for Hillary Clinton, but the recount changed the tally to 261-136.

In such a close race, a swing of even a couple of hundred votes in New York might help Barack Obama gain a few additional delegates. Currently Senator Clinton was awarded 139 and Senator Obama, 93, from New York.

Assemblyman Keith Wright, a supporter of Clinton, said, “Being around elections for the last 25 years, no candidate receives zero votes.”

The Board of Elections said a ballot-by-ballot canvassing of all voting machines has begun.

Clinton Says I Will Not Concede the Race If I Lose

HILLARY WILL BE PRESIDENT, WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT

According to her campaign advisers, Hillary Clinton will take the Democratic nomination even if she does not win the popular vote, but persuades enough superdelegates to vote for her at the convention.

Clinton’s communications director, Howard Wolfson, said she will not concede the race to Obama if he wins a greater number of pledged delegates by the end of the primary season, and will count on the 796 elected officials and party bigwigs to put her over the top, if necessary.

Ironically, back in November 2000, Hillary said this:

“I have thought about this for a long time,” Mrs. Clinton said at a rally in an airport hangar in Syracuse. “I’ve always thought we had outlived the need for an Electoral College, and now that I am going to the Senate, I am going to try to do what I can to make clear that the popular vote, the will of the people, should be followed.”

She said she wanted “to be on the side of the democratic process working,” and so would support the effort to establish direct presidential elections.
    ***
“I believe strongly that in a democracy we should respect the will of the people.”

Apparently, Hillary has changed her mind. Thank goodness for this.

Another Gigantic Union Backs Obama: SEIU

Members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) endorsed Barack Obama today. They expect him to “achieve economic justice, quality, affordable healthcare for every American, the freedom for workers to unite in unions, and an end to the Iraq war”.

“This is about more than one election. It’s about building for the next generation of America,” said SEIU President Andy Stern. “Barack Obama is creating the broadest and deepest coalition of voters we’ve ever seen.”

SEIU is one of the most politically active unions in America and has 1.9 million members which includes 150,000 members in the upcoming primary states. SEIU will mobilize thousands to go door-to-door, work the phones, and will send mail about their support for Obama.

The union will also have a substantial presence on television and radio in every critical state.

SEIU has a powerful get-out-the-vote structure and has been courted by all the Democratic candidates since the beginning of the race. Obama scored backing from another large union yesterday.

Barack Obama Relates To What You Are Saying

Or at least, this site tells me so. After you get over the Mt. Everest sized fonts, curiousity at least will compel you to click a few more times.

Barack Obama is Your New Bicycle aka “Obama makes you feel peachy”. It’s a bit of humor on the warm fuzzy feeling people are getting from hearing Obama’s message of change, hope for the future, and how Americans can be a part of making that happen.

Joel Stein of the LA Times calls it Obamaphilia. Of course there are many who say, Obama can’t be all things to all people. (Well, he isn’t trying to be.) And they’ll take this site as a platform for some strange stand against all the Obama love going on. But until then…

      Click.

And here is a link to the guy who created it. He’s an Obama supporter.

This begs the question, what would such a site for the other candidates say?

Republican John McCain’s Adviser Won’t Attack Obama

      HIGH PROFILE REPUBLICAN SUPPORTS OBAMA

Senior advisor to John McCain, Mark MacKinnon, has indicated today he will step down from the McCain campaign if Obama wins the Democratic nomination. MacKinnon, who designs McCain’s advertisements, said he could not face being part of a campaign that “would inevitably be attacking” Obama. He went on to say:

“I have met Barack Obama. I have read his book. I like him a great deal. I disagree with him on very fundamental issues but it would be uncomfortable for me and it would be bad for the McCain campaign”.

(Ironically, it seems he feels perfectly fine in attacking Hillary if she wins the nomination. Perhaps he did not read her book. )

The confession, along with former Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee’s endorsement today, indicates again just how much potential there is for cross party support for Obama, and how high up within the Republican Party the Obama support exists.

Lincoln Chafee, the former Republican senator for Rhode Island, endorsed Barack Obama, despite the fact he was unseated in 2006 partly because Obama campaigned hard for his opponent.

Obama has dubbed Republicans leaning his way “Obamacans” - disaffected Republicans who have drifted away from their party.

Are Republicans supporting Hillary too? Yes, but it seems their motivations are slightly different. Excerpt:

They have wanted her to lose the nomination for the mere sport of it, and they have wanted her to win because they think she’s the weakest potential Democratic nominee. Lately, the entire party seems united in its quiet pleading: “Please, Hillary, you’re in it, now win it — for us.”

          MEGA FOODWORKERS UNION ENDORSES OBAMA

The 1.3-million-member United Food and Commercial Workers union endorsed Sen. Barack Obama today over rival Sen. Hillary Clinton, in a nod that could hold implications for the upcoming contests on March 4. A statement from their website:

UFCW members are energized to seize this opportunity this election to change America and restore the American Dream for workers and their families. In order to deliver the type of change that is needed for good jobs, affordable health care, retirement security and worker safety, the UFCW is endorsing Senator Barack Obama for president in 2008.

The UFCW is one of the largest in the country and is particularly influential in states with upcoming primaries.

In Ohio: 70,000 members in supermarkets and food processing. In Texas: 26,000 workers, many of them Latinos in the meatpacking industry. In Wisconsin: 19,000 members. (more…)

Clinton Neglects to Pay Rent, Landlord Donates Late Check to Obama

LOVE THEM & LEAVE THEM - A Valentine’s Day Post

Keeping in line with the theme of fiscal responsibility…

When Hillary Clinton left New Hampshire in January as the big winner, a doctor and building owner named Terry Bennet says she forgot to leave something on her way out of the state: a rent check.

After finally getting paid the $500 he was owed (local newspapers wrote about the incident, and a check showed up 3 days later), the doctor says he’ll donate the cash to the campaign of her rival, Senator Barack Obama. He also said that the Clinton campaign left the space “trashed.”

A spokeswoman for the New Hampshire Clinton campaign said not paying Dr. Bennett for the space rented by campaign workers was unintentional, and called it an ‘isolated delay’. The Clinton campaign has expressed regret on multiple occasions for not cleaning up some buildings it rented, but says most property owners it worked with were paid.

            Except…

Another landlord in Iowa where Clinton placed third in the Jan. 3 caucus told the paper that he had not yet received a $7,600 payment for space he had rented out to the campaign.

            • Do I hear another potential donation to Obama?

More Clinton Superdelegates Switch to Obama

Two former Clinton superdelegates have switched to Obama. Three have switched to “uncommitted”.

Until this week Samuels was supporting Clinton. She said today that she is now supporting Obama. In addition to agreeing with his stance on the Iraq war, she said:

“I now support Barack Obama because he has brought about a new wave of hope and energy to this country, especially among our young people, who represent our future. People want to see change. Barack can help unite this country and help us embrace our diverse nation.”

Update: CNN Removes Offending Section from Video

Bravo for CNN. Apparently they understood their poor judgment (after getting a ton of complaints) about this subject here. I sent my blog entries and a number of you wrote to them and expressed your discontent.

The video can still be found here, but without the offending section (no Monica Lewinsky, no Osama bin Laden, no Ann Coultier). Now, it actually makes for a light-hearted humorous video as originally intended.
